In G.K. Chesterton’s Manalive, Innocent Smith is a man charged with a multitude of crimes, but strangely still innocent.

One of his crimes is that of murder, in which no one was killed. In fact, he tells his first victim of his plans to bring his violent gift to the world:

“I am going to hold a pistol to the head of the Modern Man. But I shall not use it to kill him–only to bring him to life.”
